What an afternoon of action!
Volkanovski is bringing the gold back Down Under, but a fierce performance from Lopes in what was a classic title main event.
Next month, fellow Aussie star Jack Della Maddalena looks to become a champion for the first time, taking on Belal Muhammad for the UFC welterweight title.
Volk's classy message
Liam O'Loughlin
Alexander Volkanovski has reacted to his win over Diego Lopes and why it meant so much for him to return to the UFC.
"It's good to be back - I've never felt the love so much," the new champ said.
"I promised my girls that I would bring the belt back to them, but then I was thinking it doesn't matter if bring the belt back or not.
"The message was a lot of people counted me out, coming off two knockout losses and the 35-year-old curse. I'm 36 years old, big break and coming back and beat a gun like Diego Lopes, who came and brang it.
"It's good to be back and for everyone watching - adversity is a privilege.
"This moment is incredible."
